ABEOKUTA-Pandemonium broke out
at Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, in Ado-Odo-Ota local government
area of the state when hundreds of students shut down the school.
The protest which reportedly
forced the rector of the Institute, Dr. Funke Akinkuolere to go into hiding
following the alleged threat of attack by the students over her alleged failure
to allow them hold their Students Union Government election.
A source who pleaded for
anonymity told our correspondent that, the angry students blocked the main
entrance of the institute as early as 7am on Thursday.
It was gathered that, the
protest sparked off on Wednesday and spread to Thursday when the students had
set to hold their election, but, were barred by the rector from going ahead .
A source within the institute
hinted our correspondent that, the election was supposed to have been held last
year December, but, was postponed by the rector who resumed office June last
year.
The protest, though, did not
record any casualty as both the rector and other members of the staff of the
institute stayed in their apartments while the protest lasted.
It was also gathered that, the
state government has directed that the school be shut and the students have
been reportedly asked to go to leave the campus indefinitely.
The directive by the
government was made known through a state television which scrolled the order
of the government for the closure of the school.
Several attempts to get the
reaction from the rector was unsuccessful as she neither picked her calls put
through her mobile phone nor respond to the message sent to her line.
Findings have shown that, the
atmosphere became charged following the students protest as residents of the
area stayed in door while traders hurriedly shut their shops.
